Bakflip G2 Tonneau Review on 2010 F150 PDF Print E-mail

When I recently traded in my 2007 F-150 for a 2010 F150 Supercrew with a 5.5' box I needed a new tonneau cover.  I used the same list of "wants" that I used when I purchased a tonneau for my 2007 this time around.  The list of things I wanted/needed in a tonneau were pretty straight forward and simple.

  •  Able to haul tall items without removing the cover
  •  Hard and lockable for security reasons
  •  Easily removable
  •  Look nice.
  •  Low profile

With the list above there is really only one tonneau on the maret that met the requirements.  So the Bakflip G2 tonneau was instantly what I knew I wanted to get. There were several soft covers that came close but didn't offer hard cover security and there were others that didn't fold up against the cab.  The Bakflip was the only one that did it all.

Having decided I definitely wanted to get another Bakflip cover for my new truck I set out to find a good price.  That proved difficult initially.  Most places wanted $739 and there wasn't much flexibility.  I was fortunate enough to be hooked up with a place that shipped the new Bakflip to me directly from the factory for less than $650, that I could handle!  If you are interested in one of these and want a great price drop me a note and I'll give you a great reputable contact so you can get the same great price.

My Bakflip arrived and I had it installed in less than 30 minutes.  The entire installation was simply setting a rail on each side and applying 3 clamps per rail.  After that you just lay the cover on the rails, secure two thumb bolts and you're done.  A tiny bit of alignment may be necessary but mine sat perfectly right from the start.

I'll start by showing you a picture of the Bakflip installed and then look at some of the features and functionality.

As you can see the tonneau sits pretty much flush with the sides of the bed and from more than 10 feet away it's hard to tell there is even a tonneau installed.  I personally prefer the low profile look and the Bakflip meets that requirement perfectly.

I was anxious to check out the changes from my previous Bakflip to this new one.  The first and most obvious change is the panels.  On the previous version the panels were a thick plastic whereas this new G2 had aluminum panels with a baked on enamal finish.  While there was nothing wrong with the old style the new aluminum panels look more natural on the truck and are supposed to be tougher.  Another drawback is supposedly the old panels would start to warp over time in high heat which I never experienced but am glad they fixed it all the same.

You can see in the photo below the finish of the panels and also how close to flush it sits with the side of the bed.

You can also notice in the image above how flat the rubber seal lays along the length of the cover. Like my last one this G2 came out of the box with a wavy seal.  While Bak promises a few days in the sun will lay the seal flat I found 10 minutes total with a hair dryer completely resolved the problem and it looked great.

My last truck had a 6.5' bed and the G2 had four panels.  This 2010 F-150 has only a 5.5' bed and therefore only 3 panels.  One thing I liked is that every panel locked down on this version.  It makes me feel as though my bed cargo is more secure as it is more difficult to break into when every panel locks into place.

Pictures in Various Stages of Folded Up

Here  is the cover with just one panel opened.

And two opened...

And finally full opened against the cab.

Here is a shot of the rail that the Bakflip sits on. As you can see it runs the length of the bed on each side and they are held in place by three provided clamps.

The latching mechanism operates the same as my old G2 tonneau but is a bit refined.  Better materials and smoother operations.  The slide that comes down to lock the travel bar(s) in place seems to have better fitment and isn't as loose within the track.

Those images hopefully show you the gist oh how it operates.  I can tell you that while traveling with it all the way open there is no rattling and it seems very secure, but then my last Bakflip did as well.

Here is a quick video I recorded showing the operation of the Bakflip G2 Tonneau cover.

Dislikes:

There are a few things on this model that I don't like.  For starters I don't like how the square tubing that holds the panel release cables are rough cut and don't have a more refined finish.  Models above the G2 do a better job here but that doesn't mean it's not worth mentioning here.  You can see what I'm talking about in the below picture.

Another thing I don't really care for is that the front deck, which holds the drain tubes, etc is wider than my last G2.  This takes up more bed room when the tonneau is in completely open position.  I suspect that has less to do with the new model and more to do with the different bed length.  Bak uses the same panels regardless of the bed length so the depth of that leading mount panel has to change to make up the difference.  The section circled below is what I am referencing.

These are not deal breaker problems but warranted mentioning.

Likes:

I already love the concept behind the Bakflip as was evident in the fact I bought another one after enjoying the first one so much.  I wanted to point out a few things I like better about this newer Bakflip G2 Tonneau over the last one I had.  The quality is much better.  Everything from better fitment of panels to the cover snaping in place more easily to the  baked on finish over aluminum panels instead of the plastic panels of my last unit.   Another real plus is the shims necessary to mount on a 5.5' F150 bed were preinstalled making installation that much quicker and easiler.  There are just a lot of little improvements such as the security rods for vehicle operation with the panels open are of better quality.I could go on and on about different little things but the end result would be the same.  The positives of the Bakflip cover in general added to the positive changes made on the new version simply leaves me very happy with my purchasing decision.

General Observations

The number one question people like to ask about is "does it leak?" I can tell you that it is not COMPLETELY water proof.  I have the tailgate step on my truck and some water comes in around there.  I also have water in around the tailgate.  This could be completely resolved with a tailgate seal but I am not horribly worried about that.  If I go through a high pressure car wash I get minimal water in the bed.  By "minimal" I mean very little.  In normal rain I have yet to see a leak or water build up.

Everything about this new tonneau, even the things that didn't change in an obvious way, just feels better quality.  From the panels now being attached with rivits instead of the glue used previously, the foam seals replaced with rubber seals which hold up better, the tighter tolerances and better fitment of the cover on the truck, just everything.  I'm anxious to see how scratch resistant the aluminum panels end up being compared to the proven tough plastic panels of before but I have high hopes.  Bak claims with their enamal baked on process the panels are very tough.  With their stellar service I have no reason to doubt that if I did have a problem they would waste little time in rectifying it.

This was by no means meant to be an advertisement for the Bakflip.  This unit simply met the needs that I have which doesn't mean it's the prefect solution for you.  I do have problems with the unit but at the end of the day the problems don't outway the things I like about it which allows me to be happy with my decision.  My goal was simply to provide by opinions and a lot of pics to help someone that may be riding the fence with their decision.

If there are any questions or different pictures you want to see feel free to drop me a note and I can help where I can.  If you want to find the best price on Bak products let me know that as well and I can hook you up.  Regardless of what you end up with I wish you luck with your selection and hope you enjoy it!
